Earth Day Activities include gardening, reading, music, dancing ASHLAND -- Ashlanders will recognize Earth Day with events today and Saturday. Today, members of the Ashland Parks and Recreation's Environmental Stewardship Program invite residents to join them at the North Mountain Park for some spring gardening. Members will be at the park, situated near Hersey Street and Mountain Avenue, between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. to prepare the soil in the butterfly garden for planting. First-grade students from Helman Elementary School will install a new ceramic butterfly drinking fountain, and master gardeners will plant a tree to celebrate Arbor Day. At the Southern Oregon University courtyard (or the Rogue River Room in case of rain), a series of events is planned: 10 a.m. -- Darrell Bloom presents a Tai Chi demonstration. 10:45 a.m. -- Jeff Golden reads from "Forest Blood." 11:48 a.m. -- Agnes Pilgrim speaks. 12:45 p.m. -- Celtic music and dance. 2 p.m. -- surprise visit from John Muir (also known as Dr. Steven Jessup). 3 p.m. -- Wildlife Images presents an educational show with wild birds of prey. 4 p.m. -- Music. 7 p.m. -- Doors open in the Britt Ballroom for "Out of the Shadows of Borneo: Voices of the Rainforest," a slide and storytelling presentation about the oldest tropical rainforest on earth, sponsored by the Ecology Center of the Siskiyous. 7 p.m. -- SOU's Native American Student Union plans readings from recent works during an Earth Day talk in the SOU Rogue River Room. On Saturday, The Ashland Community Food Store has set the sixth annual Earth Day Arts and Crafts Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 237 N. First St. The day kicks off with the dedication of the Community Peace Wall, made of tiles painted by residents of all ages and mounted on the store's front wall. Regional artisans will display their work and the Organically Grown Cooperative will grill fruits and vegetables from the region's organic farmers. The event also includes a Y2K EcoVillage made up of educational and environmental groups, community gardeners and Y2K-related organizations. Entertainment begins at noon; the fair features the final Rogue Valley performance of "A Wacky Millennial Musical" by Sticks and Stones Theatre, marimba music from Koo Koo Marimba and drum rhythms from Injera Drum Ensemble.
