Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 25, 2005 Two wrecks leave drivers hospitalized By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A pair of Christmas Eve car crashes left two people hospitalized with injuries. A 29-year-old Medford man crashed his motorcycle into the rear of a stopped car at the 2900 block of Table Rock Road. According to Medford police, motorcyclist Nathan David Handy was transported to Providence Medical Center with serious injuries following the crash. Detectives were trying to determine if Handy was under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the accident. His rate of speed was unknown. He was treated in Providence’s intensive care unit late Saturday. A little more than an hour later, Oregon State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 238 and Cady Road, just past Jacksonville Hill, Applegate Fire District Capt. Joe D’Amico said. The motorist, whose name was not released, drove his Chevy pickup off the highway and smashed into a tree. The truck ended up nose down over an eight-foot embankment. Advertisement "When we got there it was in a precarious position over the edge," D’Amico said. "It was leaning against the tree on the driver’s side." Fire crews had to attach stabilizing straps to the pickup and haul it to the road. Once it was secure, crews cut off the roof and extricated the driver. D’Amico said the driver appeared badly injured. He was taken by ambulance to Providence Medford Medical Center. Fire crews had to shut down the highway for about an hour and a half while crews salvaged the wreck. "We had quite a traffic back-up there with people trying to get to (the Applegate Christian Fellowship) church," D’Amico said. Traffic was briefly diverted down Sterling Creek Road until the highway was cleared. After the man was rescued from the truck, crews removed the stabilizing straps and the vehicle crashed down the embankment, hitting another tree before coming to rest. OSP troopers remained on the scene until a tow truck showed up to haul the vehicle off the embankment, D’Amico said.
