PUBLIC SAFETY Several car windows smashed during break-ins Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Jan. 20, 2015 at 11:53 AM Updated Jan 20, 2015 at 4:41 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Jan. 20, 2015 at 11:53 AM Updated Jan 20, 2015 at 4:41 PM » Social News At least one window-smashing thief made off with property, including several purses, jewelry and a handgun, from half a dozen vehicles over the three-day weekend in east Medford. Medford police say three thefts happened Saturday and three more were reported Monday. In each case, vehicle owners found at least one window on their car broken out. Investigators have little to go on other than a description by one of the vehicle owners that the suspect was a man in his 30s who wore a puffy green jacket. "We certainly think it's going to be the work of the same individual or individuals," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. "There's really no question." The spree began in the early morning hours Saturday when police were alerted at 2 a.m. to a theft in the 700 block of Spring Street. In that case, a suspect broke out the passenger-side window of a parked vehicle and stole a purse, Samsung phone charger and prescription medications. At 2:12 a.m., police took a report in the 600 block of Stevens Street, where both side windows in the front of a vehicle had been broken out and a Roxy purse and $900 Louis Vuitton wallet swiped from inside. At 2 p.m. Saturday, police took a report of two purses, digital cameras and a pink Luger handgun taken from a car parked in the Providence Medford Medical Center parking lot. The purses were found Sunday in nearby parking lots with some of the contents strewn about. The handgun and cameras have not been recovered, police said. At 2:47 a.m. Monday, the witness who spotted a coat-wearing suspect thwarted an apparent attempt to break into a car parked in the 700 block of Royal Avenue. The suspect had a flashlight and appeared intoxicated, Budreau said. Police took two more theft reports in the 700 block of Spring Street later that day, with a gold chain and a purse containing jewelry reported stolen. Police said these types of incidents can be prevented by making sure valuables are out of the car — or at least out of sight. "If somebody's looking to steal something, they're going to be checking car lots. They're going to check for an open door," Budreau said. "If you leave anything in your car that looks like it has value, you're opening yourself up." Anyone with information about the cases should contact Medford police at 541-770-4784.
