South's Cannon helps BYU to seventh By Mail Tribune staff Mar 16, 2021 09:11 AM A A STILLWATER, Okla. — Former South Medford runner Ethan Cannon helped the Brigham Young men’s team place seventh at the NCAA cross-country championships Monday. Cannon was the third runner to cross the finish line for the top-ranked and defending champion Cougars, whose program had a couple highlights despite the disappointing showing by the men as a whole. BYU’s Conner Mantz was the individual champion, the first American since 2008 to win the title, and the Cougars’ women’s team captured the national title. Cannon, a fifth-year senior making his debut at the national meet, placed 83rd overall and was 69th among runners competing as part of teams. His time over the 10,000-meter course was 31 minutes, 22.0 seconds. Mantz’s winning time was 29:26.1. Northern Arizona claimed its fourth crown in five years, scoring 60 points. Notre Dame was second with 87. BYU scored 254. Oregon’s lone entrant, Jackson Mestler, placed 81st in 31:19.5. The BYU women scored 96 points, ahead of runner-up North Carolina State with 151. Oregon State, ranked 23rd, had its best finish in program history at 16th with 375 points. Kaylee Mitchell and Batya Beard earned All-American honors by placing 20th (20:38.5) and 37th (20:57.7), respectively, in the 6,000-meter race. Ethan Cannon at the West Coast Conference champioships.
