March 13. 2015 12:01AM Letters to the Editor, March 13 Maybe it's just weather Looks like this has been Climate Catastrophe week according to the various articles and letters in the Mail Tribune. Apparently the current heat wave in the region has triggered them. I have been following the current temperatures on the back page of Mail Tribune and have noticed that on 3/4/2015, the high temperature was 65 degrees and the record for that day was 76 degrees (11 degrees higher), set in 1929. Wasn’t that during the worst drought in U.S. history? According to Wikipedia, (Google search "droughts") there have been four major droughts in the U.S. since 1929 that have been less severe. Since 1929 we have been filling the atmosphere with more and more CO2, so it seems logical that they should be getting more severe. Maybe if you search "snow patterns," the same type of historical data would result and show that the current weather back east is just weather. Even New Orleans has had snow, same as in 1964 and 1989! I hope the climate alarmists are making sure their carbon footprints are very small to stop the weather, I mean man-made climate, from changing. Given the rest of the world's carbon output, it is a formidable task. Jeff Fox, Medford Facts trump opinions We must pursue to its logical conclusion Netanyahu's proposal of cornering Iran. Poised to choose between a drive for peace and yet another war, facts should outweigh opinions. In "Netanyahu's Churchillian Warning," Charles Krauthammer inverts the prime minister's speech to Congress, and reshapes reality with outraged adjectives. Following a sweeping generalization that "Israel has never asked America to fight for it," Krauthammer marshals dates and events to imply success of his argument: case closed. Yet in Middle Eastern politics, cases are seldom closed, and often appearance trumps reality. Krauthammer's condensed history complicates refutation in his lengthy hit-and-run opinion. But recent instances are salient, and one offers occasion to praise George W. Bush. On Sept. 6, 2007, Israeli F-15s destroyed a suspected Syrian reactor in "Operation Orchard." Intelligence for the raid resulted from hand-in-glove cooperation between Mossad and the CIA. Without belaboring details, we must ask what the difference is between furnishing arms, financing, and intelligence, and actual combat. Besides, Ehud Olmert had repeatedly requested American strike force, and each time Bush refused. Krauthammer might have added more light had he troubled to nuance his personal opinion with objectivity. Bob Griffin, Ashland Power rests here Mr. Michel from Bonanza, writing about laws governing marijuana, gets it completely wrong when he states that "federal law always trumps state and local law." He's trying to balance the pyramid on its pointy end. We The People are the apex sovereigns. We originally joined together in communities, then regions, then states — and then as the United States. We granted certain enumerated powers to the federal government and those are listed in the Constitution. All powers not enumerated are retained by the states and the people, and this is clearly stated in the 10th Amendment. In this matter, as in so many others, our federal servant must sit down and shut up. I am touched and amazed at your quick and enthusiastic response to my letter “Catalyst For Cleanup” on Feb. 19. What a wonderful way to remember Jared Ramirez-Ponce!
