More than 100 people were told to leave the building shortly before 2 p.m., disrupting county business and court cases. The decision to evacuate was made after courthouse officials feared the package in question was an attempt to follow through on an "non-specific security threats" made to the courthouse earlier this week, said Jim Hamilton, deputy chief of the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety. "When the package showed up, they didn't know who it was from or the expected delivery on it," Hamilton said. "We had officers go up right away, work with the administration, and at that point, the decision was to evacuate." According to dispatch notes, the package came priority mail from a "Tillamook Youth Facility." An Oregon State Police bomb squad was sent from Central Point to evaluate whether or not the package was actually a credible threat. The evacuation order was lifted shortly after 3 p.m. The original call came in at 1:51 p.m. Hamilton said the decision to evacuate came from Court Administrator Kirk Brust. "Any time we get a bomb threat, we don't make the decision (to evacuate), we let the business make the decision," Hamilton said. "We try to consult." Brust declined to describe what the package turned out to be, other than to say it wasn't an explosive. The evacuation posed an inconvenience to those who were expecting to participate in court cases that were scheduled to be heard at the time of the package being delivered. "The docket's set weeks, if not months, in advance, and now cases that were scheduled to be heard are unable to be heard," District Attorney Ryan Mulkins said as he and dozens of people waited outside the building. "It's a big problem."
