"I'm just one piece of a great team," Pelham said. "The chamber board is made up of some of the best and brightest people in Southern Oregon, I almost have to pinch myself that I'm the leader of so many people who have been instrumental in making Southern Oregon what it is." Pelham hopes the region's residents see the chamber' value beyond its work with the business community. "It's working for the general health of our community," he said. "Strong viable businesses mean good living-wage jobs, an engaged community, and an enjoyable place to live. I see this as the greatest way to give back to the community that's given so much to me." Pelham grew up in Eagle Point and worked with various credit unions in Lane County for 18 years before returning to Medford in November 2003, when he was named executive vice president at Rogue. He was under former credit union CEO Tim Alford's tutelage for three years before ascending to his present role in 2007. The chamber board has set three priorities for the next year: The first is establishing a targeted approach for economic development, working with the county, Southern Oregon Regional Economic Inc., and other groups to support their efforts; The second is pursuing a feasibility study for a convention and conference center with funds set aside by the Legislature. "Sen. (Alan) Bates and Rep. (Peter) Buckley worked to get those funds, and we want to to see what would be best for all community from chamber members," Pelham said. The third item on the board list is enhancing the chamber's communications. "There are so many positive things going on with local businesses," Pelham said. "We want people to see the value and benefit of a strong business community." In addition to three board goals, Pelham has added one of his own for the coming 12 months. "I've led several membership-style organizations and have seen the importance of long-term, sustainable funding," he said. "I see that with trade associations and service organizations and charities. My objective is to build funding that's long term and sustainable so we can focus on the long-term issues Jackson County needs us to focus on."
