The body of David Evan Rice was discovered in Room 8 of the Relax Inn, 535 Clover Lane. Rice had no fixed address, according to Ashland Police Sgt. Teresa Selby. However, law enforcement records indicate that Rice most recently listed addresses on Holly Street and Jackson Street in Medford. Rice’s record includes a 1991 conviction for first-degree sodomy and a 1998 conviction for first-degree sex abuse. He was charged recently with failing to report as a sex offender. Selby said Rice died violently, but that the cause of death will not be known until autopsy results are released, likely this week. No suspects have been named publicly in the case, although police are following all leads, Selby said. In particular, police are seeking information about a bedspread that was discovered to be missing from the room in which Rice was found. The burgundy, tan, navy and green plaid, quilted spread could be a key piece of evidence. Anyone with information about it or any aspect of the case is asked to call the Ashland Police Department at 482-5211. Rice’s death is the first reported murder in Ashland in eight years.
