Hot-shooting North Medford beats Ashland North Medford boys basketball coach Tim Sam has confidence in sophomore Beau Hovland, but the first-year coach still couldn't bear to look at Hovland's 3-point attempt in the fourth quarter Tuesday night. Sam had just watched Ashland cut the Tornado's 14-point lead in half minutes into the final quarter, and he wasn't sure of Hovland's shot selection. Until it went in. "It was one of those shots where I closed my eyes and didn't open them until I heard the crowd cheering," said Sam. "When it goes in, that makes it a good shot." From that point, the Black Tornado reclaimed control of the game and won going away, 68-57, at North Medford High. North senior Gabe Burchfiel scored 19 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in helping the Tornado manage a double-digit lead until Ashland's Bryan Clevenger hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark the Grizzlies' fourth quarter surge. North also received standout efforts from sophomore Ryan Lucas, who had 15 points and seven boards; senior Zach Taylor, who had 11 points and six assists; and junior Jeff DeLine, who had 10 points and no turnovers at the point guard position. "The kids were ready to play tonight," said Sam. "We came out early and got up and down on (Ashland) a little bit and, most importantly, made some shots." North (6-11 overall, 3-5 SOC) connected on 27 of its 48 shots from the field, good for a 56-percent success rate in posting the Tornado's second straight win. Ashland, which was led by Clevenger's 16 points, dropped to 5-11 overall and 1-7 in SOC play. Crater holds a two-game lead over North Medford and Klamath Union for the conference's final state playoff berth. The Comets (12-6, 5-3 SOC) raced to a 19-2 first-quarter lead and built a 42-13 margin at the break. Derek Petersen led Crater with 11 points and Andrew Norum added nine points and 11 rebounds. Crater senior point guard Brian Goode provided nine assists, seven points and six steals. Eagle Point was paced by Tim Martinen with 13 points and Rocky Johnston added 10. Cohen drained five 3-pointers for the Cavemen, who were 11-for-14 from beyond the arc overall. Bruce Voges had 16 points, Brant Minor 12, Kory Mahr 11 and Tyler York 11 for Grants Pass, which pulled into a tie with Roseburg for second in the SOC standings at 6-2. SOC Girls ASHLAND 69, NORTH MEDFORD 48 - At Ashland, freshman point guard Alysse Carlson scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the second quarter to lead Ashland to a blowout victory. The Grizzlies led 14-10 after the first quarter and used a 28-5 burst in the second period to pull away. Stefanie Talbott added 16 points and Marla Morin scored 12. Ashland improved to 9-11 overall and 5-5 in the SOC. North Medford was without guard Brittany Hodges (sprained ankle) and Anna Lilly (bronchitis). Freshman Kailey Bostwick led the Black Tornado (5-15, 2-8 SOC) with 14 points, while Kerstin Mellbye added 11. The third-ranked Comets (19-1, 10-0 SOC) controlled the tempo of the game with their fast-paced style and Eagle Point could not counter. Crater doubled up the Eagles, 50-25, by halftime. Denson tallied a game-high 25 points and Pool tossed in 21. For Eagle Point (5-14, 2-8 SOC), senior Dani Rouhier registered a season-high 22 points. Rouhier also had three blocks and three steals. Eagles junior post Alisa Lee corralled nine rebounds. Eagle Point was playing without sophomore post Ashley Curtis, who missed her second straight game due to a strained ACL.
