Machado shines for Phoenix By DON HUNT EUGENE - As a goalie in soccer, Tony Machado isn't allowed to move around much. And maybe that's why the Phoenix High senior has taken such a liking to track, where movement is highly encouraged. Machado finished second in the 100, third in the 200 and anchored the Pirates' 4x100 relay team to fifth place at the Class 3A state track meet at Hayward Field on Saturday. Seaside won the 3A boys title with 48.5 points, followed by Philomath (46), Wilsonville (45), Lakeview (34) and North Valley (33). Phoenix was 12th with 26 points. "I grew up playing soccer, and it's always been my favorite sport," Machado said, "but not anymore." Machado gave up track after his freshman year because of conflicts with spring soccer but decided to give it another try last year as a junior. He started to have some success, and his running career took off like a 747 when Hans Voskes took over the Pirates' program this spring. "His training methods are a lot different," Machado said. "He pushed me a lot harder than my previous coaches." Machado found himself running lots of intervals extending to 300 meters. "The idea was to increase his endurance," Voskes explained. "When you get to the state meet and you're in three or four events and then you've got preliminaries on top of that, it's an endurance test." Machado passed the test with flying colors. He established lifetime bests of 10.97 in the 100 and 22.37 in the 200 during Friday's qualifying rounds and came back Saturday with times of 11.15 and 22.47. Not too shabby for someone competing at his first state meet. "I went into each race visualizing exactly what I had to do," Machado said. "I was too busy to get scared." Providing Phoenix with its other points were Nathan May, who finished fourth in the 3,000 in a time of 9:01.43 on Friday, and Lalo Flores, who took sixth in the 800 Saturday in 2:02.32. North Valley's Cole Parmelee, meanwhile, took fifth in the triple jump Saturday with a mark of 42-6 and finished the meet by scoring 24 of the Knights' 33 points. Parmelee won both the high jump and long jump on Friday. The Knights also received a fine performance Saturday from Ralph Santiago, who established a personal record by 20 feet in the javelin. Santiago's mark of 180-3 was good for fifth place and only 11 inches out of second.
