The defending national champion and fourth-ranked Cougars (31-4) came back from a 30-29, Game 2 deficit en route to a 30-18, 34-32, 30-23 triumph over the 17th-ranked Raiders (25-6). "We had the deer-in-the-headlights look in Game 1, but we came back to play extremely well," 12th-year Raider coach Paul Elliott said. "We came away knowing we can play with a championship-caliber team." Junior All-American hitter Kristina Matchett paced the SOU offense with 13 kills, while junior all-region middle blocker Lindsey Aitchison converted nine of 20 attack attempts, served up two aces and led all players with three blocks. Southern Oregon continues pool play action today against second-ranked Fresno Pacific (9 a.m.) and Wilmington, Del. (6 p.m.). All matches take place at the Point Loma Nazarene University gymnasium. The Raiders must defeat the Sunbirds this morning to have a realistic chance of advancing to Friday’s quarterfinal round.
