A neighbor reported the fire about 6:50 a.m. and firefighters arrived to find scorch-stained windows and smoke pouring from every opening of the unoccupied home, Ashland Fire and Rescue Capt. Walt Anders said. The fire, which apparently started in a crawl space under the house, burned under the floor, up the inside of one wall and into the attic, Anders said. Most of the fire was under the floor, which firefighters had to remove to get to the smoldering blaze. Ashland sent two engines to the fire. Jackson County Fire District No. 5 sent one engine to the fire and another to Ashland’s main fire station in case other calls came in, Anders said. Crews had the fire mopped up by 8:30 a.m. Fire investigators remained at the house until 3 p.m., but the cause of the fire is still undetermined, Anders said. The fire marshal estimated damage to the house at $75,000 and damage to the contents at $10,000.
