Letters to the Editor: Dec. 26 Monday Dec 26, 2016 at 12:01 AM Trump's fear-mongering past In the early 1980s a guest on a New York TV show was warning the audience the "we" may have beat the Japanese in the Second World War, but they were conquering us economically, buying up American factories, business and real estate. This fear-mongering guest riled the TV audience to the point that they were almost rabid. Who was this fear-monger? Donald J. Trump. What was motivating Trump? Japanese interests had outbid him on several properties in New York City. Thus Donald was on a rampage against the Japanese. Trump can best be described as a sophomoric, chauvinistic, misogynistic, rich, spoiled brat. He is psychologically too immature and unstable to be commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Trump's attorney and close friend was the late Roy Cohn, Sen. Joseph McCarthy's right-hand man in the 1950s and a major player in the political witchhunt perpetrated by McCarthy. Dark clouds are now forming on the horizon of this country. The lights of decency, civility and respect are going out, across the United States. Mike E. Miles Medford Doubting Russian hacking The Democrats, Obama, the Clintons and others have accused the Russians, especially Putin, of trying to interfere with election results in favor of Donald Trump. I find that hard to believe. I believe that if they did interfere they tried to help Hillary become president, and why not? The Obama administration let Putin annex the Crimea without firing a shot and when we did nothing, he next marched into the Ukraine. I'm sure he'd like to take back the Cold War countries they occupied, including Poland and Hungary, if we don't make a stand. As for Putin and Trump being friends, I think Trump knows Putin and Russia, but Trump is a real unknown to Putin and I'm sure he senses trouble down the line with President Trump. Regarding election interference, the United States has one of the worst, if not the worst, record in recent history of interfering in other countries' elections. In the last six decades, we supported numerous dictators, including Marcos, Batista, Fidel Castro until he went Communist, and Noriega. Granted, Russia is not our friend, but before we try to drain any swamps in Russia, Trump has to get the pumps going to drain Washington, D.C. Gerold Erlinger Shady Cove Protect our health care On Jan. 3, Republican leaders will begin the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. I just wrote a letter asking my members of Congress to protect and strengthen the Affordable Care Act — not end it. The Affordable Care Act has helped make insurance a reality for 30 million Americans — and lower the uninsured rate to the lowest rate in American history. It's also provided vital protections and benefits like no lifetime caps, a ban on discrimination against patients with pre-existing conditions, and more. It was a start. It can be improved. The new president and his cabinet promise to remove the rights and benefits that have been hard fought for the poor and middle class. We the people need to build on strengths and oppose the dark agenda that would remove the benefits achieved. I subscribe online to a big city paper, but am finding more information in the Mail Tribune. This is a difficult and troubling time and you are helping us understand it.
