Crews with the Rural Metro Fire Department had to use hydraulic extrication tools, commonly known as the "jaws of life," to free one of the drivers from the crash, according to a Rural Metro release. The crash occurred just before 11 p.m. in the 8000 block of Williams Highway just east of Murphy, the release said. Crews from Rural Metro and American Medical Response arrived to find a full-size pickup on its side in the road, and a four-door sedan in the ditch. The driver of the pickup had self-extricated, but the driver of the sedan was trapped inside, the release said. Firefighters removed the roof of the sedan to gain access to the driver, who was freed in just under 30 minutes and transported to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass with serious injuries. The driver of the pickup was also transported, with non life-threatening injuries. Williams Highway was shut down for about an hour. Applegate Valley Fire District and Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene with traffic control. Oregon State Police is investigating the crash, the release said.
