Or swimming in the lake, mountain biking and golfing during the summer. At Mohonk Mountain House, which is a Hudson Valley resort just 90 miles outside of New York City, it’s possible to have a classic all-inclusive getaway any time of the year. We chose February and spent our time outdoors, playing in the snow and ice for two days. The family-owned resort has been in business since 1869, and it features a beautiful, old-world hotel. We recommend you get a room with your own fireplace to complete your cozy retreat. We opted for the all-inclusive package so we wouldn’t have to worry about meals, and they have buffet breakfasts, which included omelet stations, freshly-made pancakes and waffles, sausages, bacon and all the usual morning indulgences. Lunch was also a buffet, and the daily carving station was the best part of it. Dinner was a three-course meal (alcohol was not included in the all-inclusive package). But the highlight of the resort was the included activities, which could keep you busy all day. In the winter, these activities (for children and adults) included the outdoor ice rink, which never had more than a dozen people on it at any time. It had a fireplace on one end and mountains on the other, so you never felt like you were in New York, let alone in this country. Every day there was a different free resort-led winter activity, ranging from snow tubing to cross-country skiing, or you could opt to do any of the activities on your own. There were also nature walks, snowshoeing and a large array of fitness classes. The indoor pool was also a highlight, as it was warm and inside a glass enclosure that provided a view of the icicles, snow and mountains as we swam and relaxed. Plus, there’s a great 1-foot-shallow section for youngsters. The spa is not to be missed. In addition to the fabulous treatments (the Mohonk Red massage, $190 for 80 minutes, was heavenly), you have access to the spa area for the entire day that you’re receiving your treatment. They have a heated outdoor mineral pool, which is amazing in the winter when it’s snowing outside. There’s also have a steam-room, a sauna and plenty of places to sit in front of the mountains or by a fireplace with a cup of tea to relax. In the spring, summer or fall, you can play on the Scottish-inspired golf course, you can go mountain biking on the 40 miles of surrounding trails, or you can play tennis. Since the resort is so close to New York, Philadelphia, New England and New Jersey, it’s a great add-on when you visit any of those areas.
