Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 24, 2005 Three-on-three tourney to flood Medford streets Deadline to register is today for ‘Hoop-It-Up’ event slated Saturday and Sunday By DON HUNT Mail Tribune Bob Wise likes to joke that he was the 13th man on his 12-man high school basketball roster in Houston. Wise may not have had much ability, but few can rival his passion for the game. That’s one reason why the vice president and general manager of Medford’s KOBI-TV will fill the streets of downtown Medford with a "Hoop-It-Up" 3-on-3 tournament Saturday and Sunday. The two-day event, co-sponsored by KOBI and Avista Utilities, will take place on Fir Street between 8th and 10th streets. The deadline to participate has been extended to 5 p.m. today (noon if registering online). Last-minute entries should be dropped off at KOBI-TV, 125 S. Fir St. Players can register online at www.hoopitup.com . Advertisement Entry forms can be picked up at any local Subway restaurant or the TV station. The registration fee is $130 per team. Seventy-five teams had registered by Tuesday, Wise said. "We want this to be a special family event for downtown Medford," Wise says. "We think this can grow into something everybody can be proud of." Wise, 45, started a similar tournament in Redding, Calif., in 1996. He saw that event grow from 122 teams the first year to 315 teams in 2004. The tournament features various divisions that separate teams according to age, gender and ability levels. Six-foot and under divisions are also available. Every team is guaranteed a minimum of three games. A slam-dunk contest will be held at noon Saturday and a free-throw contest, where players have a chance to ultimately win $1 million, will be held throughout the two days. "We cater to every age and ability level," Wise says. Wise hired Hoop It Up, a national organization that puts on 3-on-3 tournaments across the country, to help coordinate the tournament. Wise said baskets and other equipment, including a special floor covering for the main two courts, will be set up on Thursday evening. Food and beverage vendors, along with a medical team from Providence Medford Medical Center, will also set up shop, Wise said. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Medford Parks Foundation.
