We're trying for the next day' Comment By Vera Westbrook Roseburg News-Review MailTribune.com By Vera Westbrook Roseburg News-Review Posted Oct. 23, 2015 at 4:39 PM By Vera Westbrook Roseburg News-Review Posted Oct. 23, 2015 at 4:39 PM » Social News The Umpqua Community College Board of Trustees has approved a calendar for campus healing presented by Interim President Dr. Rita Cavin with a proposed 13-month recovery calendar of campus events following the Oct. 1 shootings on campus. October was designated by the board as a period of mourning and the start of classes. Planned activities include tributes, services, raising the Oregon flag, vigils and the start of the “UCC Strong” and “I am UCC” campaigns. A historian was also appointed to document the Oct. 1 tragedy. The black plastic on Snyder Hall is also scheduled to come down over the weekend, though plywood will remain. A large permanent sign will also be placed in front of the building. “We’re not trying for perfection,” Cavin said. “We’re trying for the next day.” In November, the calendar shifts to Thanksgiving for neighbors and the community. A concert by the Eugene Symphony in Jacoby Auditorium will be scheduled in November or later, and a food drive to give back to the community will be planned. December’s calendar will concentrate on healing, including activities for life balance and mental health. The tributes on the UCC campus will come down during the winter break, and the historian will memorialize them. The city's Festival of Lights will include a UCC tribute. Cavin requested approval from the board to form six Recovery Advisory Subcommittees to convene by December. She envisioned that one board member would be on each subcommittee to report back to the board. The December subcommittees included a Snyder Hall subcommittee to discuss what to do with Snyder Hall, and also an Honoring Umpqua Nine subcommittee, for memorials and naming opportunities. In January, a Commencement 2016 subcommittee is scheduled to discuss honoring the special graduates affected by the Oct. 1 event. She suggested a bigger commencement event for the 2016 graduates. “This is a very different commencement,” she said, with perhaps a ceremony in Stewart Park, more music and awards for bravery. Also in January, she recommended that an Honorary and Posthumous Degrees subcommittee convene. For February, Cavin suggested a Fall 2016 Opening subcommittee. She believed that opening time on campus is a sensitive time because that is when the Oct. 1 event occurred.
