PREP ROUNDUP Speaks, Shepherd shine at state swimming Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 21, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Feb. 21, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News GRESHAM — Senior Lauren Speaks placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke and senior Ethan Shepherd took fourth in the 50 freestyle for the Phoenix swim teams during the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state finals at Mt. Hood Aquatic Center on Saturday. Speaks recorded a time of 1 minute, 10.28 seconds to generate five points for the Pirates, who finished 10th out of 15 teams on the girls side. North Bend’s Cassie Dallas won (1:06.90). Shepherd recorded a 22.56-second time for Phoenix boys, who ended up 11th out of 12 schools. North Marion’s Noah Norris was fastest (21.05). Also for the Pirates, Emily Samudio earned sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:03.37). La Grande captured the boys title with 68 points, followed by Catlin Gabel (66) and Sweet Home (42). Phoenix had three points. The Sweet Home girls secured the championship with 82 points, followed by North Bend (75) and Salem Academy (37). The Pirates recorded six points. Girls Basketball ROGUE VALLEY ADVENTIST 30, HOSANNA CHRISTIAN 19: At Klamath Falls, Ashton Petray had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists and Rogue Valley Adventist won the Mountain Valley League playoff title for the first time in school history at Oregon Tech. Rose Tovar added eight points and nine rebounds and Savanah Zamora seven rebounds for the regular-season MVL champion Red Tail Hawks (22-3), who assured themselves a Class 1A home state playoff game next Saturday. RVA led 11-9 at halftime against the Lions (20-7). Petray and Tovar were named to the all-tournament team. Skiing SLALOM: At Mt. Ashland, Crater’s Griffin Hokanson won the boys slalom with a combined time of 1 minute, 20.36 seconds and Ashland’s Maddie Hunkele was fastest on the girls side (1:26.17) during Southern Oregon action. Ashland’s Noah Catropa was second (1:20.98), South Medford’s Cody Marthoski third (1:23.01), the Grizzlies’ Ian Rinefort fourth (1:24.30) and Ashland’s Curtis Hills fifth (1:25.44) for the boys. It was a top-five sweep for the Grizzly girls, with Trueda Pollard taking second (1:26.75), Karen Bach third (1:29.71), Frida Graumann fourth (1:29.88) and Meadow Sylvan fifth (1:29.91).
