Horse competition begins Monday CENTRAL POINT - The versatility of the American quarter horse and the skill of its riders and trainers will be showcased this week during the Oregon Summer Classic Horse Show and Great Northwest Futurities at the Jackson County Expo. Competition begins Monday and runs through next Sunday. Friday is an off day. The event, which features more than 600 horses competing in 84 different classes, is put on by the Oregon Quarter Horse Association in conjunction with the American Quarter Horse Association. Events will begin each day about 7 a.m. and continue into the evening at Compton and Isolo arenas. There is no charge for spectators. Visitors will have a chance to see many styles of riding, including Western, English, trail, roping, working cowhorse and reining. Saturday and Sunday will feature the final performance of the Great Northwest Futurities, with Western, English and lunge line competition. Commercial exhibits will be open at the show each day, with western decorative items, clothing, jewelry, horse equipment, trailers, barns and furnishings. For more information, call 826-3524.
