In the first game, the Comets broke a scoreless tie with seven runs in the fourth, all coming with two outs, in a 12-1, five-inning win. In Game 2, Crater overcame a 1-0 deficit with five runs in the fourth en route to an 8-1 victory. Crater improved to 7-7 overall, 4-5 in the SOC. Eagle Point is 4-8 and 1-8. Comets coach Jim Powell, whose team has struggled on offense, credited the work they did in the days prior to the breakout performance. Advertisement "That was one thing we worked on," he said. "I know these guys can hit. We just finally got the bats going ... We’re slowly edging up. When you’re down in the .100s and .200s (batting averages), you have work to do. That’s why we went back to fundamentals. We talked about having a plan at the plate." Crater senior outfielder Jesse Bailey wielded the big bat in the opener, hitting a two-run double in the fourth inning and a grand slam one frame later, when the Comets scored five runs. He was 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs. "He’s not a big kid," said Powell, "but he has potential when he hits it well." In the fourth, Crater’s Tyler Schmidt and Cory Staniforth were on base with singles and Tyler Davis loaded them when he was hit by a pitch. The Comets then busted out with five straight hits: an RBI single by Charlie Reina; Bailey’s double, one of his two in the game; Jeff Weiss’ two-run single; Josh Surgeon’s RBI double and Schmidt’s run-scoring single. An inning later, Bailey followed up three singles and a walk with his bases-clearing clout to right field. Staniforth was 3-for-3 with two runs. Winning pitcher Tony Davidson allowed five hits, struck out three and didn’t walk anyone. In the nightcap, Weiss ripped a two-run single in the fourth and Davis and Reina singled in runs. Reina followed an inning later with a two-run double and was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Schmidt was 2-for-4 with a double.
