The City Council gave the go-ahead to the priority list for the Safe Sidewalks to Schools Project during its study session Thursday. Washington’s neighborhood is followed in priority by streets near Abraham Lincoln, Hoover, Jefferson, Kennedy, Orchard Hill and Roosevelt elementary schools. Medford plans to put sidewalks around 12 elementary schools over the next three years. Augmenting the November bond is $1.8 million in federal funding for a total of $6.4 million, which is short of the estimated $7.5 million needed to complete the projects. City engineers received opinions from the City Council, residents and school principals about sidewalk priorities, said Cory Crebbin, public works director. He said it’s possible some sidewalks on the list won’t be built if funds fall short. Advertisement Streets near Washington Elementary are scheduled to get sidewalks before school starts in the fall, according to the list released Thursday. Sidewalks around the next five schools on the list are supposed to be completed by the beginning of the school year in 2006. Streets that received the highest priority are closest to the schools or are used by more children and more cars, said Crebbin. Projects that don’t need right-of-way acquisition or utility lines moved also will be completed first. Howard, Lone Pine, Oak Grove and Wilson elementary schools will see sidewalk construction at the beginning of 2007, according to the timeline. Estimated costs, depending on the complexity of the project, range from $27,500 around Jackson Elementary School to $1.9 million around Oak Grove Elementary School.
