St. Mary’s finished third two years ago and second last year before winning it this time around after placing three runners among the top 10, including freshman Emma Bennion (eighth, 20:25.7) and senior Gianna Isola (ninth, 20:31.3). St. Mary’s girls team totaled 52 points to edge Siuslaw (78), Arcata of California (81), Roseburg (85) and Grants Pass (110). Cascade Christian finished 11th, led by senior Madelyn Scott (37th, 22:30.8). Grants Pass won the boys race with 50 points, ahead of Roseburg (75). St. Mary’s was 12th overall, led by sophomore Evan Koenigsman (31st, 18:23.4). Cascade Christian senior John Shipley placed 14th in 17:31.7. Volleyball ROGUE VALLEY CLASSIC: North Medford lost to eventual runner-up Crook County in the first round of the championship bracket and Ashland won the consolation championship to highlight tournament action at North Medford High. North Medford finished second in its pool and was seeded fifth in the championship bracket before being edged by fourth-seeded Crook County, 25-21, 25-17. Unforced errors and a well-disciplined effort by Crook County hindered the Black Tornado. Grants Pass lost to Thurston in the championship bracket quarterfinals, 25-20, 25-23, and the Colts were beaten by Crook County, 25-21, 25-22, in the semifinals. Roseburg beat McNary 25-15, 25-22 in the semifinals and earned the tourney crown with a 27-25, 20-25, 15-9 win over Crook County. In consolation bracket play, South Medford was eliminated in the first round by Foothill of California, 25-20, 25-17, and Crater beat South Eugene 25-21, 18-25, 15-13 in the quarterfinals before falling to Ashland in the semis, 25-15, 25-21. The Grizzlies went on to beat Foothill in the consolation finals. BROOKINGS 3, ROGUE RIVER 2: At Rogue River, Courtney Sakraida had 11 digs, five kills, five assists and three aces and Bella Dodson 21 digs for Rogue River during nonleague action. Brookings won, 17-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 15-8. Willow Ryon turned in five kills and four aces and Della Birdsall eight aces for the Chieftains (0-7). Boys Water Polo ASHLAND FOURTH: At Roseville, Calif., Ashland’s boys team finished fourth overall for its best showing in the annual California Capitol Challenge, posting a 2-2 record. Ashland secured Friday wins over host Roseville, 10-9, and Woodcreek B, 15-4, before falling on Saturday 17-3 to Amador Valley and 12-8 to Alhambra. Ashland goalie Vincent Wright combined for 25 blocks with five assists in the four games, while Luke Abell scored 11 goals overall and the Grizzlies got nine goals apiece from Devon Lancaster and Finn Griffin. Erik Oline scored six goals. MEDFORD SPLITS: At Cottage Grove, Medford beat Cottage Grove, 15-11, and fell to South Salem, 17-5. Cyrus Christianson and Bram Gibson had seven total goals on the day, and Cormac Webb made seven saves against South Salem. Girls Water Polo MEDFORD SWEPT: At Cottage Grove, South Salem topped Medford, 11-9, and Cottage Grove beat Medford, 19-6. Tori Kelly had seven goals and Marissa Drake six goals on the day, and Andrea Babb had 19 total saves.
