Bank robber sought after evening holdup Police are looking for a man they say robbed a Medford bank Wednesday night about a half-hour before it closed. Police said a man entered the Washington Mutual bank at the north Fred Meyer store at 6:37 p.m. and handed a teller a demand note. The robber, who was described as a black male in his late 30s to early 40s, took an undisclosed amount of cash. He left the bank on foot, carrying the money in a brown paper sack. Police said he may have been shopping at the Fred Meyer store beforehand. Although no weapon was seen, police said the robber told the teller he was armed. There are similarities between Wednesday's incident and a Nov. 12 robbery at the US Bank on Court Street, but Lt. Tim George said it's unlikely the cases are related. He added that robberies typically increase during the holiday season in Medford. Although there were five customers in the bank, none were alerted to the robbery until after the man left, police said. "We were just coming in to get our money" for holiday shopping, said Penny Taylor, a customer who entered the bank as the robber left. Taylor said she didn't get a good look at him, but police said he is believed to be 5-feet, 10-inches tall, weighing about 190 pounds. Photographs from video recorders mounted in the bank show that the robber was wearing a dark bomber-style leather jacket, a black baseball cap and blue Levis. Medford police are being assisted by the FBI and the Oregon State Police. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Medford police at 774-2250 or 774-2591.
