Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 15, 2005 Light One Candle: Kids want special Christmas for grandma EDITOR’S NOTE: "Light One Candle" is an annual Mail Tribune feature that focuses on the single need of an individual, family or agency during the holidays. By JONEL ALECCIA Mail Tribune When the sexual assault occurred, the 16-year-old girl knew she could turn to her grandmother for help. From the time the girl and her four siblings were small, their grandma, 59, was their caretaker and confidante, stepping in when their parents stepped out. So the news that their grandmother is very ill with liver disease only compounds the trauma of sexual abuse by an acquaintance, says Jackie Ralph of the Children’s Advocacy Center, a Medford agency that serves abused kids. "They aren’t sure she’ll make it through Christmas," Ralph says. "This child writes to her advocate: ‘Christmas to us is just being grateful for being with your family.’ " Advertisement At the same time, if the girl and her siblings had a wish this holiday season, it would be for a comfortable Christmas for them — and for their grandmother. They’d like a tree with beautiful ornaments and a few small gifts. Grandma would enjoy candles and comfortable shirts in size extra large, the children say. The oldest boy, an 18-year-old, would like a hooded sweatshirt, size large, and the Eagles Greatest Hits CD. The 16-year-old girl and her sisters, ages 13 and 14, would like shirts in sizes medium and small. Their 11-year-old brother would like sweatshirts in size large. Everyone can use hats, scarves and gloves or gift cards to local department stores. To help this family, deliver donations from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Children’s Advocacy Center, 816 W. 10th St., Medford. Or call Ralph at 282-5474, Ext. 115.
