Surfing Update: Nelscott Reef Is On Jan 10, 2008 12:00 AM A A Oregon's only professional surfing competition has been set for this weekend in Lincoln City. Teams competing in the Nelscott Reef Tow-In Classic can expect a swell peaking at 20 feet starting Friday and lasting through Sunday afternoon, contest organizers say. Surfers from as far away as South Africa and Brazil will ride behind Waverunners to reach giant off-shore waves in the only tow-in surfing competition on the North American continent. Waiting since October for the perfect combination of sea conditions, contest organizers say the competition is likely to take place Friday, but could be pushed to Saturday or Sunday. This weekend's swell is the first of the season that hasn't accompanied hurricane-force winds, says competition founder John Forse. Swells of 14 to 16 feet characterized the contest in its previous two years, he says. Citing a season of poor weather patterns, contest organizers last month extended the holding period past the typical Dec. 31 deadline.
