Raiders fall to Willamette Oct 08, 2000 12:00 AM A A SALEM — Jesse Ward hit a 47-yard field goal in the third overtime to lift Willamette to a 27-24 win over Southern Oregon Saturday. Andrew Ecklund ran for 176 yards and scored three touchdowns, including runs of 74 and 44 yards, to lead the Bearcats. Willamette improved to 2-3 and ended a three-game losing streak, while the Raiders fell to 2-2. Dusty McGrorty ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns to lead Southern Oregon, which was down 24-14 with under a minute to play before tying the game to force overtime McGrorty scored from — yard out with 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter to cut Willamette's lead to 24-21, and the Raiders recovered an onside kick to set up Jason Manning's 39-yard field goal with no time left. In the first overtime, Manning missed a 27-yard field goal, his third miss of the game and the Raiders? fifth botched field goal on the day, but Ecklund fumbled on the Bearcats? first play, pushing the game to a second overtime. Ward then missed a 33-yard field goal, but Willamette's Kefense Hynson intercepted Dan Walters to force the third overtime. Walters was then intercepted again, setting up Ward's winning kick, which came after the Bearcats lost four yards on three plays. We certainly had our chances to win it, said SOU coach Jeff Olson. I'm proud of the kids to come back and be in contention to win it. The kids played their hearts out. That was just a very good football game between two good football teams. Walters completed 36 of 55 passes for 317 yards and three interceptions as SOU racked up 479 yards of total offense. Willamette 27, S. Cross Country — — WILLAMETTE INVITATIONAL — — At Salem, Southern Oregon senior Sarah Kleppen finished ninth among 255 collegiate women and the Raiders finished seventh out of 31 teams in the cross-country meet. Kleppen posted a 5K time of 18 minutes, 15 seconds. Other top SOU finishers were sophomore Liana Bernard, who had a personal record by 1:03 with a time of 19:09 (53rd), and Alison Garich (60th, 19:20). Hanna Smedstad of the University of Oregon won the race with a time of 17:04. In the men's event, the Raiders finished 20th out of 33 teams. Freshman Travis Floeck was the Raiders? top performer, placing 96th out of 322 runners. Floeck's time was 26:49 in the 8K race. Former Ashland High runner Ian Soloff was runner-up, just one second behind Dan Nelson's winning time of 24:01.
