COLLEGE FOOTBALL OSU's Andersen details 'very, very busy' first week Comment By Gina Mizell The Oregonian MailTribune.com By Gina Mizell The Oregonian Posted Dec. 21, 2014 @ 4:50 pm By Gina Mizell The Oregonian Posted Dec. 21, 2014 @ 4:50 pm » Social News CORVALLIS — Forgive Gary Andersen for not having much time to decorate. The primary objects in his new Oregon State office late Wednesday afternoon? Two silver laptops — one HP and one Dell. Two smartphones. A packet — a “cheat sheet,” really — listing all the current Beavers by head shot, name, number and position. A folded orange OSU jersey and framed orange towel presented to Andersen during last Friday’s introductory press conference that are largely engulfed by an elaborate shelving unit. And over Andersen’s right shoulder, a big-screen TV is set to the 1980s Music Choice channel. Throughout a 40-minute conversation, Madonna’s “Material Girl” and the “Ghostbusters” theme song played softly in the background. Eventually, Andersen’s new workspace will feature a bit more character. For now, it looks like it belongs to a guy who recently completed a whirlwind of a first week as the Beavers’ new head football coach. “Some moments it feels like (the day I was announced as OSU’s new coach) was yesterday,” Andersen said, “and some moments it feels like it was a year ago. It’s been a great week. It’s been very, very busy.” The tasks have pulled Andersen in multiple directions. Yet the coach consistently used one word to describe his early days on the job — emotional. The sadness of leaving players he cared about at Wisconsin. The exhilaration of starting a new adventure in Corvallis. The eagerness to invite coaches to his new OSU staff, along with the discomfort of telling others they will not be retained or brought over from Wisconsin. “Those are taxing things,” Andersen said, “because you’re in a position to make decisions to change people’s lives. That’s not the fun part of it. It’s really not. So that’s very, very difficult.” Completing that staff — which so far only officially includes wide receivers coach Brent Brennan — has been one of Andersen’s first priorities. Yet he detailed how he’s exercising more patience while filling those roles at OSU, particularly after his “views changed on a few coaches” after studying the Pac-12’s up-tempo spread offenses on film this week. Andersen has also connected with current players and potential future Beavers. The coach said he’s made efforts to “stabilize” OSU’s current recruiting class by making initial contact with all commits, though some have already de-committed and pledged elsewhere. He’s passed along his contact info to current players and told them to reach out during the holiday break if they want to talk. Andersen also mingled with fans at the Beavers’ basketball game against Mississippi State last Saturday and during a radio appearance at Buffalo Wild Wings on Tuesday. Later Wednesday, he was scheduled to venture down to Eugene for a donor event expected to include dazzling amounts of Christmas lights. Throughout the week, he has met with others who will assist his program — from trainers to academic counselors to strength and conditioning staffers — and chatted with coaches from other sports. The work was set to slow down a tad last weekend. Andersen planned to hit the Nike outlet store Saturday to revamp his family’s wardrobe (Wisconsin was outfitted by Adidas) and perhaps begin his Christmas shopping. Then he was to fly home to Utah, where he will spend the holidays with his family — including his 90-year-old mother — for the first time in years. That wasn’t the worst problem to have, Andersen acknowledged, because being away during that time meant his team was preparing for a bowl game. Soon after that, though, Andersen hopes the Valley Football Center will no longer carry the empty and somewhat-eerie vibe it had Wednesday. That the cleaned-out offices will be filled, as his staff prepares to welcome the Beavers back with a clear set of ideas and objectives for 2015. “I’ve got to be completely well-prepared,” Andersen said. “These moments and these days right here are really game days for head coaches.” After that, maybe, Andersen will have some time for decorating.
