"We’re just happy to have Hidden Valley behind us," said Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner. "They are great competitors and great rivals. We enjoy it, and it’s a lot of fun, but it’s very competitive. Escobedo used two assists from fellow senior Uriel Castillo to help him score his second hat trick of the season for the Pirates. "It was the Cookie (Castillo) and Jaime show again," said Flenner. Castillo dealt two assists to Escobedo last week when the latter recorded his first three-goal performance in a win over Rogue River. Escobedo scored in the 11th minute after a pass from Castillo set him up one-on-one with the Hidden Valley goalkeeper. He scored again off an Albaro Gonzalez assist in the 16th. Advertisement One minute before the break, South Korean foreign exchange student Dong Won Kim headed in a 14-yarder off a throw-in pass from senior Nathan Bursk to put the Pirates up 3-0. Castillo and Escobedo hooked up again in the second half with a goal in the 42nd minute. Hidden Valley’s Tyler Nelson saved the Mustangs from a shutout in the 60th minute with a header over senior keeper John Rowden. Rowden hauled in three saves for Phoenix off nine Mustang shots. "John Rowden was the man," Flenner said. "My seniors are shining right now." MAZAMA 2, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, after a scoreless first half, Mazama’s Jose Melgoza broke the ice with a goal in the 60th minute, assisted by Mario Barajas. Twelve minutes later, Barajas added an insurance goal. Mazama’s Jon Dawson earned the shutout. HENLEY 5, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, Henley scored three first-half goals and two in the second in the Skyline Conference win. Henley’s (6-1 Skyline) Colten Hines tallied twice. Eberto Ortega contributed two assists, and Andy Guest, Brad Asay, and Phillip Pena also scored. In goal for the shutout was Anthony Olsen. District 3 Boys ST. MARY’S 4, GLIDE 0 — At Glide, Austin Grant scored the first and third goals for St. Mary’s, which was locked in a scoreless first half. Grant also assisted on the undefeated Crusaders’ fourth goal, and Dash Hillgartner added a goal near the end of the game. Duncan MacDiarmid, who earlier this year matched a national record with five straight hat tricks, scored once. Goalie Dylan Bourke earned the shutout behind a defense that allowed only three shots on goal. District 6 Girls HIDDEN VALLEY 2, PHOENIX 1 — At Murphy, Hidden Valley stunned Phoenix with two goals in the first five minutes and broke a second-place tie with the Pirates in District 6 action. Denise Powell drove a high, 25-yard shot off the hands of Pirate goalkeeper Jaclyn Unruh in the third minute for Hidden Valley. Only two minutes later, Kayla Flick slashed the net again for the Mustangs on a penalty kick and a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs (7-2) led in shots-on-goal, 8-6. Junior forward Marci Klimek bested Hidden Valley keeper Melissa Henner on a penalty kick for Phoenix in the 66th minute. ST MARY’S 4, ROGUE RIVER 2 — St. Mary’s outshot visiting Rogue River 23-3 en route to the District 6 triumph. The Crusaders’ Renee Huizinga opened the scoring with a goal in the 28th minute. Five minutes later, Kayla Eichamer made it 2-0. Angela Viens put Rogue River on the board at the 37th minute, making it 2-1 at halftime. Megan Frankel and Erin Chamberlain allowed St. Mary’s to distance itself from the Chieftains, scoring at the 45th and 50th minutes. Rogue River’s Tess Whipple scored the final goal at the 72nd minute. NORTH VALLEY 2, HENLEY 0 — At Merlin, freshman forward Karli Clark scored one goal and had an assist for District 6-leading North Valley. The Knights (9-1 District 6) took a 1-0 lead at the 16th minute when Kayla Wilhelm scored from 23 yards out off a drop pass from Clark. In the second half, Clark scored on a follow up off a shot by captain Shea Miller, who is returning to form after suffering a concussion in a car wreck about a month ago. North Valley’s defense, led by senior stopper Felicia Chavez and sweeper Claire Willing, didn’t let Henley get a shot on goal.
