Emergency crews from Rogue River Rural Fire District and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash at about 10 a.m., sheriff’s Capt. Joe Puckett said. Investigators determined Betty Jo Shafer, 68, pulled out of her driveway in a 1995 Ford van into the path of a northbound 1984 Ford pickup driven by Karla M. Pedersen, 41, of 1653 Jump Off Joe Creek Road, Grants Pass. Pedersen was unable to stop and struck the van’s passenger side door, Puckett said. She had only minor injuries, he said. Harry Ray Shafer, 78, a passenger in the van, was declared dead at the scene of the crash. Betty Jo Shafer was transported to Providence Medford Medical Center with serious injuries, Puckett said. She waslater transferred to Rogue Valley Medical Center, where she was in critical condition Tuesday night, hospital officials said. Puckett said Mrs. Shafer had received her driver’s license fairly recently and investigators believe her inexperience behind the wheel probably contributed to the crash. Sheriff’s investigators and the medical examiner continue to investigate, Puckett said.
