A passenger, Jenny Ilene Lockhart, 23, was killed when a car driven by 25-year-old Christopher Wayne Evans, of White City, ran off Table Rock Road around 3:40 a.m. and struck an embankment, according to Jackson County sheriff’s deputies. Emergency medical workers pronounced Lockhart dead at the scene. Evans was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center where nursing staff later listed him in fair condition. Both Lockhart and Evans were wearing seat belts, deputies said. Charges will be filed against Evans in connection with the crash, said sheriff’s Sgt. Dace Cochran. Evans’ friends told investigators that he had been drinking earlier that morning at several bars. Evans’ blood-alcohol level had not yet been determined, Cochran said. Evans drove his white Nissan 300ZX through the stop sign at the intersection of Table Rock and Wilson roads, Cochran said. Wilson ends at the T-intersection, but the car traveled straight across Table Rock, hopped a ditch and slammed into the dirt bank, Cochran added. "There’s no straight ahead, and that’s where he went," Cochran said. No other vehicles were involved. Evans told deputies that he didn’t see the stop sign. Heavy fog had reduced visibility to about 200 feet, Cochran said. The speed limit on Wilson is 45 mph. Lockhart reportedly was new to the Rogue Valley. She has two sisters living in the area, Cochran said.
