Johnsen sets women's mark; Baurers triumphs CENTRAL POINT -- Sally Johnsen had an idea she would break 40 minutes in the annual Shamrock Run Saturday. She did better than that. The assistant principal at Eagle Point High School covered the 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in 38 minutes and nine seconds, shattering the women's course record by 29 seconds. "I've rededicated myself to running but I was surprised to run this fast," Johnsen, 31, said. "My best time prior to today was 39:50 and that was three or four years ago. It's a great feeling." Johnsen, a native of Riverside, Calif., finished fifth overall in a field of 80 and in the process defeated 49 of the 54 men in the race. Jed Baurers was the first runner to cross the finish line. The 19-year-old Jacksonville resident had a spirited duel with 45-year-old James Burton of Grants Pass before outkicking him to a win 35:19. Burton finished second in 35:25, while GP's Mark Moffett was third in 35:57, Central Point's Joe Griffin fourth in 36:57 and Rogue River's Gary Clarida fifth in 36:59. Like Johnsen, Medford's Sandi Whittle also logged a record-setting run. Johnsen, 50, knocked nearly 14 minutes off the 50-59 women's age-group record with her time of 43:14. Another record fell in the 5K event. White City's Trevor Coolidge sped through the course in 16:58 to break the previous mark of 17:11 set last year by Chris Redfeldt.
