PREP ROUNDUP: North trio leads Tornado to title By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Oct 08, 2022 07:43 PM A A VALLEY OF THE ROGUE STATE PARK — North Medford used a little bit of a pack mentality to run away with the girls cross-country victory Saturday in the Stan Goodell The Legend Invitational at Valley of the Rogue State Park. Senior teammates Marisela Villa, Eleanor Nichol and Reese Meager each crossed the finish line in order, respectively, within nine seconds of each other to help the Black Tornado dominate the 5,000-meter girls race. Villa won in 19 minutes, 45.1 seconds and was followed closely by Nichol (19:46.1) and Meager (19:54.8), with North teammates Maritza Villa (seventh, 21:01.7) and Juliana Scull (14th, 22:14.4) posting top-15 efforts for good measure. The Black Tornado girls closed with 27 points to easily surpass runner-up Grants Pass, with 41 points, and third-place Ashland (68). St. Mary’s senior Saniyah Ayala turned in a strong effort in finishing fourth in 20:09.8, while sophomore Nikaela Apilada paced Ashland by placing ninth (21:26.1). South Medford’s top finisher was Cyerra Mejia, who was 25th (24:22.8), and Raena Crisp (27th, 24:48.2) led Cascade Christian. North Medford junior Logan Huffman earned a split-second decision over South Medford sophomore Devon Scott for third place in the boys race, with Huffman coming in at 16:55.7 and Scott at 16:55.8 in a battle to the finish line. Matt Rieman of Grants Pass won the boys race in 16:33.6 and Hidden Valley’s Grant Bohannon was second (16:45.2). North Medford sophomore Elijah Zavala placed sixth (17:18.6). For South Medford, juniors Jazz Hernandez (seventh, 17:26.1) and Rowan Nichols (eighth, 17:31.7) secured top-10 finishes to help the Panthers win the boys team title with 42 points. Hidden Valley and Grants Pass tied for second at 70. Cole Beneventi was Ashland’s top finisher (15th, 18:09.7), while Eagle Point’s Jeremiah Cordle came in at 22nd (18:36.8), just ahead of Cascade Christian’s Tayen Landers (18:37.8). PAUL MARIMAN INVITATIONAL: At Philomath, Phoenix senior Kyla Potratz placed fourth overall in the 5,000-meter girls race in 20 minutes, 14 seconds to highlight the Pirates’ effort in the multi-school event. Philomath’s Adele Beckstead won the girls race in 19:36.8. Freshman Herminia Corona finished 39th overall (23:14.8) to help the Phoenix girls place eighth overall in the 12-school race. The top runners for the Phoenix boys were Nathen Hammond (51st, 19:49.7) and Orlando Contreras (53rd, 19:51.6). The Pirates were 10th in the 18-school boys race. Cottage Grove’s Jaden Owens won the boys race in 16:34.6. Philomath swept the boys and girls team titles. Track.jpg
