Knights use balanced attack to slay Illinois Valley CAVE JUNCTION - Illinois Valley flirted with its first loss in Skyline Conference boys basketball action last Friday, edging Phoenix in overtime. On Tuesday, North Valley pushed the fourth-ranked Cougars beyond the brink as the Knights stunned Illinois Valley, 61-54, on its home floor. "They came out and bit us," said Illinois Valley coach Jeff Brimhall. The loss dropped IV to 14-4 overall and 8-1 in Skyline play, while North Valley improved to 5-4 in league. The Knights used a balanced attack and a high level of intensity to slip past Illinois Valley. Sean Gronholm led North Valley with 18 points, while Derek Wright and Derek Armstrong each added 17 points. "They just pretty much outhustled us and outworked us tonight," said Brimhall. Illinois Valley opened the game with a 12-4 run, only to be outscored 14-8 in the second quarter as North Valley managed a 27-25 halftime lead. "We just didn't play well as a team in the second quarter and played lackadaisical," said Brimhall. "They were patient and we tried to win it on our athleticism." The Cougars had a chance to win at the end as the Knights missed six free throws late, but three missed layups and a couple free throws hindered IV's cause. Daniel Houston had 19 points, while Justin Graven added 15 and Beau Brown 14 for the Cougars. Rogue River had a chance to win in regulation and in the first overtime, only to have its shots miss the mark. Jason Luchterhand had 21 points, 17 rebounds and four steals to lead the Chieftains (14-4, 7-2 Skyline), who went 20-for-75 from the field. Jeff Klug had 20 points and Brock Richards 15 to lead the Mustangs (6-13, 4-5). HENLEY 60, PHOENIX 47 - At Phoenix, Henley constructed a mammoth, 39-8 halftime lead, then survived a furious Phoenix rally. The Hornets (2-7 Skyline) had four players score in double figures. The Pirates (6-13 overall, 2-7) were led by junior post Brady Rhodes, who tallied all 19 of his points in the second half and also corralled eight rebounds.
