Roseburg wins invitational PHOENIX - Roseburg finished with eight champions and posted a 3-0 record in dual meets Friday to win a four-way invitational at Phoenix High. The Indians edged the host Pirates by six points for the overall title (56-50), with North Medford taking third at 201/2 points and Ashland fourth at 51/2. "Roseburg is really a tough team," said Phoenix coach Harry Mondale. "They've got some big kids and strong kids. They're well-coached and know what they're doing when they're out there on the mat." Roseburg posted its most success in the heavier weights, winning five of the final six weight classes. It got wins from Joel Oiler at 152 pounds, Nick Shaffer at 160, Levi Thomas at 189, Nathan Sprague at 215 and David Folsom at 275. The Indians also received top efforts from Trevor Lofstedt (103), Brian Walker (125) and Seth Thomas (135). Phoenix countered with four champions. In his season debut, sophomore Tyler Staten won at 112. Also taking first for the Pirates were Kevin Cowley (119), Chris Vote (130) and George Pearce (140). Mondale said the number of champions isn't nearly as important to him as the experience gained against the Class 4A squads. "We don't try to invite teams we can beat," said Mondale, whose team wrestled the likes of Crater, Grants Pass and South Medford last week. "We want teams in here that will make us a better wrestling team." North Medford received championships from Jimmy Ulrey at 145 and Rob Folsom at 171.
