Scott drilled four straight 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Comets pulled away for a 52-18 win over Ashland at Crater High. Although the Comets (13-7, 5-3 Midwestern League) were engaged defensively, they led just 6-2 after the first quarter. Scott, however, began to fire away and knocked down a 3-pointer on four consecutive trips down the floor to give the Comets a 19-8 edge heading into halftime. Scott’s treys were the only field goals the Comets made in the period. “We were super sluggish after the first quarter and were kind of just going through the motions, then (Scott) hit those four 3s in a row and that opened things up for us,” said Crater coach David Heard, whose Comets outscored the Grizzlies 23-6 in the third. Scott finished with five 3-pointers and 19 points to go with three assists and three steals. Mallory Heard had 10 points, eight rebounds and six steals for the Comets, who forced 26 Ashland turnovers. Crater, which is third in the MWL with four games left, also picked up nine points and four steals from Destiny Fahndrich. The Grizzlies (3-17, 1-7 MWL) received eight points from Hailee Hayes. ROSEBURG 67, GRANTS PASS 40: At Roseburg, Grants Pass hung in early but couldn’t contain Roseburg senior post Jordan Stotler, who went for a game-high 20 points. The Cavers trailed 17-16 after one quarter but got outscored by a combined 30-13 over the next two periods. Abi Johnson and Karly Dinkel led Grants Pass (10-8, 5-5 SWC) with eight points each. MAZAMA 51, PHOENIX 26: At Klamath Falls, Mazama capitalized on its fast break to remain undefeated in the Skyline. Phoenix (7-15, 1-8 Sky), which was led by Kaylene Ritter’s 10 points, trailed 25-7 at halftime. The Vikings (17-5, 9-0) used a half-court trapping defense to force turnovers that led to transition baskets. MARY’S 50, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 24: Adrienne Birmingham dropped in nine of her 14 points in the first quarter as host St. Mary’s surged to a 13-2 lead and turned away Cascade Christian. Meg Vasey added nine points for the Crusaders (12-10, 4-3 Southern Cascade League), who have locked up third place in the SCL. The Challengers were led by Emily Stephens’ eight points. The Chieftains (3-16, 1-7 Southern Cascade League) also picked up 14 points from Larissa Hamilton and 11 from Jesse Langfield.
