Lawrence Crowley, 32, said he and his father-in-law were driving to a relative's home when they saw a police car parked on Hamilton Street near its intersection with 11th Street. "That caught our eye," Crowley said. "There's not really a place to park there." The distraction made him miss his turn, so he turned on a side street to try to loop back. That's when he saw a group of kids in the street and the commotion they were watching. "I noticed the police officer chasing the guy down the street. I think they were trying to help the cop, but they couldn't do it," Crowley said. The man running from police was 32-year-old Kevin Walker Maple, wanted on a warrant for a parole violation, police said. At 12:50 p.m., a Medford police officer had turned onto Hamilton Street from 11th Street and spotted Maple walking on the east side of the road. Maple glimpsed the patrol car and bolted, with the officer in pursuit, police said. Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said Maple hopped a 6-foot fence and dashed through a yard before running through a gate, hopping another fence and rolling on the ground. Police used a stun gun, but it didn't work. "Both darts need to strike the subject for it to be effective, and we believe one of them missed," Budreau said. The officer tackled Maple on a nearby sidewalk, but Maple fought back, then took off, Budreau said . Enter Crowley. "My first instinct was 'Man, we've got to help this guy,'" he said. He gunned his truck, pulled in front of Maple and parked on the sidewalk, blocking his way. Maple diverted into a nearby driveway. Crowley chased and tackled him, bringing him down in wet, muddy grass. "He surrendered immediately," Crowley said. "I think he thought I was the cop." Police took Maple into custody just before 1 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, he remained in the Jackson County Jail with no bail on charges of attempted assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, interfering with a police officer and criminal mischief, as well as the parole-violation charge, jail records show. Crowley said his actions were instinctual. He has family working in law enforcement in Las Vegas and Northern California. "It was no problem," he said.
