The Cavers built a 4-0 lead through two innings in the opener and held off the Black Tornado for a 4-3 win. In Game 2, the teams played nine scoreless innings before GP pushed the lone run across in the bottom of the 10th in a 1-0 win using international tiebreaker rules. Grants Pass remained unbeaten at 14-0 overall and 9-0 in SWC play, while North Medford dropped to 8-4 and 7-2. “It was just two great teams and a good day for softball,” said Tornado head coach Mike Mayben. “Those were really great games. When you have quality seniors like they have, that’s a good core group and they kept their composure and played great softball.” Grants Pass capitalized on five walks and two hit batters by Sarah Thomas in the first 1⅓ innings to take its 4-0 lead in Game 1. Teanna Gonsalves came on in relief in the second and allowed three hits and four walks in 4⅔ scoreless innings of relief. North Medford rallied with three runs in the seventh inning but came up just short with the bases loaded of securing an equalizer. Taelor Mayben led off with a single and Grace Jovanovic walked before Janelle Rodgers cranked a two-run double. After an RBI single by Rylan Austin pulled North within 4-3, the Tornado was able to load the bases before Amy Robinson got a fielder’s choice at home, a strikeout and a flyout to shortstop to end the game. In Game 2, North had runners reach base in seven of the first nine innings but couldn’t score. In the 10th under international tiebreaker rules that call for teams to open with a runner on second base, the Tornado had Olivia Lethlean on third with two outs but Robinson induced another flyout to the shortstop. Tra Kucera and Alex Barry had two hits in each game for North, while Mayben was a combined 3-for-7 with one run. Thomas rebounded in Game 2 by striking out 13 and walking only two in 9⅔ innings. SOUTH MEDFORD 3-5, ROSEBURG 0-1 : South Medford’s Hannah Newman hammered her fourth home run of the season and supplied ace Pat Moore with enough in the nightcap to get a sweep over Roseburg. After the Indians (7-6, 5-4 SWC) had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Newman cleared the fence in left-center field to give the Panthers a 2-1 advantage. Alexis Baker added a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the fifth to put South Medford (12-2, 7-2) up 5-1. Moore allowed one earned run on three hits and five walks accompanied by eight strikeouts. She also went 3-for-4. In the opener, Moore fanned 16 during a three-hit shutout. She walked just one batter. Bailee Tatum hit a two-run double during the Panthers’ three-run first inning. Both Newman and Rachael Moore had a pair of hits and scored a run. EAGLE POINT 16-10, ASHLAND 5-3 : At Ashland, Eagle Point’s Megan Ayres picked up two wins from the pitcher’s circle in a Midwestern League sweep over Ashland. Ayres allowed just one earned run and struck out 11 in each contest. In the opener, the Eagles’ Paige Leeper went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs. Her bases-clearing double capped an eight-run sixth inning and gave the Eagles (9-2, 3-2 MWL) enough to win by way of the 10-run mercy rule following Ashland’s half of the sixth. Eagle Point’s Miyah Smith was 2-for-3, drove in three and scored twice while Kayli Meerten went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, and Kylene Briggs 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. In Game 2, Shaelynn Grady was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for the Eagles, who received two runs and a couple of RBIs from Leeper. Ayres went 2-for-4. Denlay McAllister went 4-for-5 and Claudia Delgado 3-for-5. In Game 2, Alyssa Wallace hit a two-run inside-the-park home run and added an RBI triple. Emily Johnson was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs while Valerie Meltzian earned the win, allowing three runs — one earned — on two hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. HR — P: Wallack. LAKEVIEW 12-18, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1-12 : At Lakeview, a rough afternoon left Cascade Christian with an injury to Mariah Miller and two Southern Cascade League defeats. Miller, who finished 2-for-3 with a triple, broke her ankle while turning the corner coming home in the opener, which went just five innings by virtue of the 10-run mercy rule. In the second game, the Challengers (2-7, 1-2 SCL) lost a 9-7 lead after the Honkers tallied seven runs in the fourth inning. Sarah Miller went 3-for-4 with three run-scoring singles for the Challengers (2-7, 1-2 SCL) while Marli Martin and Kelsey Bogue drove in two runs apiece.
