Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 1, 2006 Jarring crash halts traffic along 1-5 A tractor-trailer carrying empty jars overturned on Interstate 5, blocking traffic for several hours early Friday morning and restricting northbound lanes all day. The truck tipped about 4 a.m. Friday and skidded on its side to entirely block I-5’s northbound lanes about 6 miles north of the Oregon-California border, Oregon Department of Transportation officials said. Jackson County Fire District No. 5 said the truck driver, whose name wasn’t released, wasn’t injured. Oregon State Police responded to the wreck to investigate and help with initial traffic control. The Oregon Department of Transportation had crews at the scene all day to direct traffic while a crew from Twedell’s Towing, of Medford, worked to remove the truck, said Gary Leaming, an ODOT project information coordinator. Crews shifted the truck, which was lying on its side, into the left lane about 6:30 a.m. to restore one lane of travel. Leaming said traffic moved smoothly through the one-lane accident zone all day. Crews from the tow company spent the rest of the day unloading the truck’s cargo of empty jars, about three-quarters of which were shattered, Leaming said. Twedell’s workers said the truck had to be emptied before they could right it. Officials estimated that the truck would be cleared from the freeway by 9 p.m. Friday.
