SOC BOYS SOCCER Ashland rolls past Phoenix, 6-0 ASHLAND -- James Kinard scored two goals and four other Grizzlies scored as Ashland routed Phoenix, 6-0, in a non-conference boys soccer match Tuesday at Ashland Middle School. The Grizzlies improved their record to 2-0. Other players scoring for Ashland were Zack Potocki, Trevor Streng, John Armstrong and Miles Doshier. Scott Beaver assisted the goals by Streng and Doshier. On Kinard's first goal, he headed in a corner kick by Sam McMillan. Despite the lopsided win, Ashland coach Eisa Tiaa Toutou said the Grizzlies must improve some parts of their play. "We continue to have the same problems," he said. "We are not starting well and we didn't finish opportunities. "We did have some good give- and-gos," said Toutou. "And two goals were scored because of good communication. "But we weren't giving a full effort." Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner was impressed by the Grizz. "They are very fast and I've never seen so much confidence in a team," Flenner said. "They are fun to watch." CRATER 3, GRANTS PASS 0 -- At Central Point, Crater did all of its scoring in the second half to push its record to 3-0, with its third shutout. Grants Pass goalie Matt LaMont blocked a penalty kick by Jason Licato with 12 minutes left in the first half to preserve a scoreless tie. But the Comets came on strong after the intermission. Six-and-a-half minutes into the second half Cody Holm scored on assist from Jon Taylor, nailing a left-corner shot from 16 yards out. Fullback Matt Hinchcliffe began the play with a long pass. The Comets extended their advantage to 2-0 90 seconds later when Jordan Kell took an assist from Holm and nudged in a rebound from his own shot from point-blank range. The final goal came with eight minutes to play. Ben Nystrom took an assist from Nate Tewes and buried a kick from 8 yards out. Crater outshot the Cavemen, 16-10. MOUNTAIN VIEW 2, SOUTH MEDFORD 1 -- At Bend, South Medford (0-1) showed signs of promise despite falling short in the Panthers' season-opener as Taylor McCool scored twice to pace Mountain View. After playing to a scoreless first half, McCool took advantage of a fallen Panther defender to break free and slip a shot past junior goalkeeper Kyle Hadley in the 54th minute. South Medford's Adam Flannery tied the contest in the 74th minute, looping a shot over goalkeeper Teal Tenney for an unassisted goal. McCool added the game-winner with one minute to play in extra time. Mountain View held a 12-10 advantage in shots on goal. South Medford senior Andy Riggs held Mountain View scoreless in the first half.
