And Nick Staller gave the Eagles just that. The junior pitcher tossed a complete game in a 4-3 victory as Eagle Point salvaged the split after losing the first game 14-0 in five innings at The Yard. "(Staller) gave us some hope," Eagle Point coach Tom Britton said. "It was a real gutsy performance, especially after the way we played in the first game." Staller struck out five, walked two and retired 12 of the last 14 batters. Advertisement Staller’s one-out single began a three-run rally for the Eagles (3-2) in the opening frame. Matt Collier followed with an RBI double in the gap and Derrick Grieve provided a run-scoring single. Grieve went to second on a passed ball, then scored the inning’s final run on Casey Reedy’s single. Eagle Point (3-2) picked up what proved to be the winning run in the second. Kyle Snyder reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Ryan Augino drove in Snyder with a single. South Umpqua scored two runs in the third to cut the Eagles’ lead to 4-3, but Staller took over and blanked the Lancers over the final four innings. Augino went 3-for-4 and Reedy added two hits for the Eagles. Eric Savage fired a two-hit shutout in the first game for South Umpqua. Savage struck out five and walked none. "(Savage) is a big strong right-hander," said Britton. "He overpowered us." Garrett Rhodes went 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in two to lead the Lancers’ 15-hit attack. "We just came out and laid an egg," said Britton. "We weren’t ready to play." The Pirates (3-1) gained control in the fourth inning when they scored 10 runs. Pirates’ senior Robert Woodword, who is 14-for-17 at the plate on the season, went 5-for-6, scored two runs and had five RBIs. John Goldberg bashed a home run to center field in the sixth inning, scored three runs and had six RBIs, while Chad Walker went 4-for-6, scored two runs and had five RBIs for the Pirates. Nelson’s homer put the Indians (2-2) ahead 4-0 and Buxton provided the final blow in the sixth. Pitcher Blake Keitzman struck out eight and gave up just one hit in four innings of work to notch his first win of the season. Buxton went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Keitzman, Nelson, Dusty Brigham and Mickey Schmorde also added two hits apiece.
