Alice D.'s letter criticizing some local Christian men for handing out New Testaments incorrectly asserted that she believes giving out Bibles is “not at all in line with Jesus’ teachings.” She declared that someone with a true “Christian heart” should, instead, be giving out food to the needy. How does she presume to know Jesus’ teachings or what a “Christian heart” even is, when, last time I looked, his words and teachings all come from the Bible? While she is correct in stating that the Bible teaches Christians to feed the poor, Jesus also specifically said, “Go into the whole world and preach the Gospel to all creation.” Christians, surprisingly, can do both! There is huge Christian support for many wonderful local food organizations like Salvation Army, TRF Food Pantry, Medford Food Project, ACCESS, Mobile Food Pantry, Heritage Food Pantry, St. Vincent de Paul, God’s Food Pantry, Medford Gospel Mission and others. In a country founded on Christian principles and free speech, it is sad that she finds it “offensive” when a person hands out free Bibles in a public place, but laughable when she calls it un-Christian. Glenn Eshoo Medford Fox News is not news I've never thought of Fox News as entertainment. But that's how its owner, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., described it in a press release in 2012 ( http://newscorp.com/press-room /, June 28, 2012). News Corp. decided to split its assets into two companies. Fox News Channel was grouped with the entertainment assets, while The Wall Street Journal and other newspapers were grouped with information services. If its owner doesn’t consider Fox News Channel to be news, then I think it is fair (and balanced) to state that “Fox News” is not news. Neal Anderson Jacksonville Jury of his peers? I lamented recently when I learned of the $1 million pity verdict awarded to the unfortunate little girl who was injured during her delivery six years ago. As an obstetrician, I know that a baby’s shoulder getting severely caught is an unpredictable and sporadic occurrence. All of us who deliver babies fear this, as we know that we may be blamed for injuries outside of our control. Unfortunately, this is what recently happened. The jury, in feeling sorry for the child, obviously did not consider the medical evidence as the literature clearly states that in modern obstetrics the provider is not to be blamed for injuries from shoulder dystocia. Well, you may say, “that’s OK, the doctor had insurance. He won’t suffer.” Indeed, that is true. Those who will suffer are the many Rogue Valley women who will be victims of increased defensive medicine as a result of this verdict. Obstetricians in our area will now be much more wary knowing that local juries of our peers are unwilling or unable to be objective. Dr. Daniel Tomlinson, chairman, department of OB/GYN, Rogue Valley Medical Center (1990-1994), Providence Medford Medical Center (2013-2014) Medford Glyphosate is toxic Has anyone noticed the onslaught of doctors and scientists coming out with discoveries of glyphosate in both ground and surface waters and human blood and milk? It is at the same time recognized even by the WHO as a probable carcinogen. Has anyone also noticed how green and vibrant the fields and roadsides are with the growth of grasses and herbaceous plants with the rains and warming temperatures of spring? Except, that is, for the strips of yellow and brown dead or dying grasses that line the roads, fence lines and along rows of grapes and fruit trees in our local orchards and vineyards. How convenient and easy it is to apply herbicide and the weed problem is gone (for a time). Now we're seeing that we're creating a different problem! Glyphosphate is the main active ingredient in "Roundup," the most widely used herbicide in the world, and therefore the most prevalent toxin in our waters and bodies. I would rather be exposed to tall grass and weeds and the chores of weeding and mowing than the invisible toxic killer that has infiltrated our world. Don't use agricultural toxins! Staying with host families, students will be attending school, touring the country and representing Medford, Alba's sister city. This is possible because of the generous support of our community! Volunteers and local businesses were actively engaged in many fundraisers, culminating in our 2015 Alba Exchange Auction at the Inn at the Commons. We'd like to thank everyone involved for all the hard work, time and effort! We could not have asked for greater support from our students, families and every individual that attended and demonstrated their commitment and support to the relationship of both countries and the opportunity it provides to our young adults.
