PREP VOLLEYBALL North falls to Sheldon in straight sets Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 16, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Sep. 16, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News EUGENE — North Medford might have been intimidated early against top-ranked Sheldon on Tuesday and dropped a straight-set Southwest Conference volleyball match to the Irish, 25-15, 25-18, 25-20. “We started slow and timid,” said North Medford coach Erika Wright. “They are significantly bigger than us. As we got in rhythm, we served tougher and put pressure on them.” Emily Carter, North’s senior outside hitter, excelled in the match against undefeated Sheldon (8-0, 4-0 SWC). Carter slammed 16 kills, with just three errors, and had six digs. “She absolutely lit it up,” said Wright. North Medford (5-1, 2-1) played inspired defense with 32 digs, led by junior libero Anna Lorenz with 11. “It meant we were rallying to the ball and getting the job done,” said Wright. “We just didn’t have a lot of opportunities to run offense and get into our system.” ROSEBURG 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0: At Roseburg, Roseburg picked up its first league victory against winless South Medford, 25-7, 25-14, 25-8. The Panthers dropped to 0-3 in the SWC and 0-5 overall, while the Indians are 2-6 overall and 1-3 in conference. SOUTH EUGENE 3, GRANTS PASS 0: At Grants Pass, Elliott Cook had six kills and six blocks and Alexa Ryan nine kills for Grants Pass during Southwest Conference action. The Cavers dropped to 1-5 overall, 0-3 in league. CRATER 3, MAZAMA 0: At Klamath Falls, senior outside Destiny Fahndrich paced Crater with 12 kills and nine digs as the Comets won the nonleague match, 28-26, 25-20, 25-15. Junior Nicole Morse added three kills, 10 digs and three aces for the Comets (5-1). Crater received strong defensive play from junior libero Amanda Gardner and freshman Rane Jensen, who combined for 28 digs. ASHLAND 3, EAGLE POINT 0: At Ashland, Eagle Point struggled with passing on serve receive and dropped a MWL match, 25-13, 25-10, 25-14. Ashland (7-4, 2-1 MWL) served 16 aces against the Eagles (3-6, 0-2 MWL). Karlie Richardson, a senior setter, led the Grizzlies with six aces to go with 16 assists. Ashland hitter Ellie Case pounded 12 kills and also had five digs and two blocks, while Payton Onesti contributed three aces and three digs. ST. MARY'S 3, PHOENIX 1: At Phoenix, Madi Christensen had 13 kills and went 16-for-16 serving with three aces as St. Mary's won the nonleague match, 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-13. Ashley Rietmann had 24 assists, and Emily Johnson was 18 of 19 and Mackenzie Addington 17 of 18 serving for the Crusaders (6-6). Kassidy Calhoun recorded eight kills, Emi Weiss 10 digs and Lyzett Gutierrez 15 digs for Phoenix (3-5). CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, MYRTLE POINT 1: At Myrtle Point, Claire Hawkins tallied 12 kills as Cascade Christian won its sixth straight, 25-11, 22-25, 25-17, 25-14. Karisa Waldron recorded nine kills and five blocks, Ellie Brown nine kills and three aces and Caroline McMahon seven kills, eight aces and 20 digs for the Challengers (6-1). GOLD BEACH 3, ROGUE RIVER 0: At Gold Beach, winless Rogue River dropped the nonleague match, 25-19, 25-23, 26-28. The Chieftains (0-5) played scrappy defense with junior Bella Dodson scooping 27 digs and Briana Morales and Heather Myer coming up with 14 each. PROSPECT 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1: At Prospect, Baley VanWormer had 10 kills and Prospect won the nonleague match, 25-13, 25-20, 15-25, 26-24. Chrystyna Smith recorded nine kills, Jordan Kuykendall 27 assists and Marissa Raines 38 digs for Prospect (3-1) against Illinois Valley (1-5).
