Four days after collecting three hits in the Panthers’ 14-3, season-opening victory over Henley, Adamson went 3-for- 4 and drove in three runs to lead South Medford to an 8-5 win over Centennial High of Peoria, Ariz. The junior shortstop also had three RBIs on South Medford’s first leg of a four-game trip in Arizona. The Panthers meet Dakota Ridge of Colorado at 8 a.m. today. "Jared did a great job for us last summer with the (Medford) Colts (American Legion team), and he’s just carrying that through," South Medford coach Steve Antich said of Adamson. "He’s getting his shot at varsity baseball and he’s making the most of it." Trailing 4-2 after five innings, South Medford exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good. Justin Meyer kick-started the rally with a double. Two outs later, Nick Donato reached base on an error, scoring Meyer. Ben Koizol drew a walk, putting runners on first and second. Zach Wilson then bunted down the third-base line. Coyotes pitcher Mike Nicastro fielded it but threw wildly to first base, allowing Donato and Koziol to score with the tying and go-ahead runs. Advertisement Dan Chancler followed with an RBI single that made it 6-4. The Panthers added two insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Adamson and a sacrifice fly by Donato. "The most gratifying thing was the way we scratched back after falling behind," Antich said. "We’ve got some fighters on this team." Chancler and Meyer each went 2-for-4 at the plate and Meyer scored three runs. Kenny Licea, a junior right-hander, worked the final three innings in relief of Rick Imhausen to get the win and run his record to 2-0. Centennial lost for just the third time in 18 games this season. Zack James had a three-run triple in a six-run first inning for the Black Tornado. The Vikings’ lone hit came off a Quinn Hummel double in the fourth inning, Rohrbough had a three-ball count only once and struck out 10, including five in succession. The Black Tornados’ Darren Bruhns and Abe Eubank each went 3-for-3 from the plate, and Eubank scored three times. The Pirates committed a pair of costly mistakes in Game 2 as Brookings returned the favor with a 6-5 victory. Brookings, by virtue of winning a coin flip, will play in today’s championship game against Rogue River at 3 p.m. Phoenix will take on Newport in the third-place game at noon. The Pirates scored a run in the seventh inning of Game 1 on an RBI single by Woodward to tie the game. In the eighth inning, Dustin Smith singled, then scored after an errant throw to first on Brenton Ferguson’s infield hit. Ferguson had three hits and scored twice, while John Goldberg and Smith each added two hits. In the second game, Phoenix committed a crucial error in the sixth inning that led to the eventual winning run. The Pirates also had a runner called out in the third inning after not touching third base on what would have been a two- run hit. ROGUE RIVER WINS TWO — At Talent, Mike Miller’s two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning and strong pitching by Gary Richardson gave Rogue River its second win of the day in the Phoenix Invitational. After downing Newport 11-1 in their first game, the Chieftains used their heroics to beat North Bend, 3-1. Miller’s homer came after Josh Hill singled and ended a duel in which Richardson went all 10 innings, giving up four hits and striking out 12. In Rogue River’s first game, Justin Castro pitched a five-hitter. Softball NORTH MEDFORD SPLITS — Kendra Strahm fired a one-hit shutout and struck out 18 as North Medford cruised to an 8-0 victory over South Salem in its opening game of the North Medford Invitational. The Black Tornado wasn’t so fortunate later in the day as it dropped a 5-4 decision to Barlow. In the latter contest, Barlow’s Kathy Cox slammed a three-run triple in the fourth inning and the Bruins tacked on two more runs in the fifth to overcome North Medford’s early 4-0 lead.
