The Challengers took the opener, 14-1 in five innings, behind Eric Higday’s three-hitter. In the nightcap, they scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 7-6 victory, their third walk-off, eighth-inning win in five games. In Game 2, Illinois Valley went ahead 6-5 with a run in the top of the eighth. In the bottom, Carson Cochran rapped a one-out single, stole second and scored on Knute Thompson’s second triple of the game. Kevin Wheeler singled in Thompson to end it. Thompson was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs, and Cody Coggins, Will Weaver and Trenton Palmer each had two hits for the Challengers (15-2, 7-0 SCL). In the opener, Higday struck out four and walked one. Coggins was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, Weaver was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Thompson had two RBIs and two runs. Softball ASHLAND 20-13, SPRINGFIELD 0-0: At Springfield, Ashland swept the Midwestern League matchup in a pair of five-inning games to up its record to 12-9 overall and 6-7 in league. In the first game, Ashland led 18-0 after three innings. Georgia Williams was 2-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs. She had a home run and a double. Hannah Teixiera drove in four runs and Delaney Rodriguez three. Grace Lenthe went 4-for-5 and scored twice and Anay Philpott went 3-for-5 with two runs. Lenthe pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and a walk. In the second game, the Grizzlies scored four in each of the first two innings and cruised. Lenthe was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs, and Teixiera was 3-for-3 with two runs. Theresa Lehman drove in two. Pitcher Williams allowed three hits and struck out 12 without walking a batter. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 23-18, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1-1 — Cascade Christian swept the Southern Cascade League twin bill at U.S. Cellular behind the hitting and pitching of Kelsey Bogue and Shaylee Ledesma. Bogue had four doubles in five at-bats on the day, and Ledesma tossed a couple two-hitters. Both games went five innings. In the opener, Cascade Christian (4-9, 3-3 SCL) scored 13 in the third inning. Bogue was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and three runs. Ledesma was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs. In the circle, she struck out 11 and walked two. In Game 2, Bogue was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Ledesma fanned nine and didn’t walk anyone.
