Coffee. The event was held last Friday. The previous year's effort, also a record for the company, raised just over $500,000. This year's event marked 10 years of fighting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. On Friday, all sales at Dutch Bros. coffee stands were donated to the MDA. All 263 Dutch Bros. locations in seven states participated in the event, with the money donated to the MDA in support of ALS research and family services. Over the past 10 years, more than $2.53 million has been donated to the MDA through the Drink One for Dane program. Drink One for Dane Day honors the company's co-founder, the late Dane Boersma, who died from ALS in 2009. "The impact that is made by our community is beyond what I could have ever imagined," said Travis Boersma, Dane's younger brother and company co-founder. "My mind is blown every year by the generosity of our customers, franchisees and baristas. Thank you." ALS is an incurable disease that affects the parts in the nervous system that control muscle movement, which eventually causes difficulty in swallowing and breathing. The average life expectancy is two to five years after diagnosis. "The results from this year's Drink One for Dane Day and the outpouring of support from the Dutch Bros. community on this 10th anniversary of the event is nothing short of astonishing. The Muscular Dystrophy Association is incredibly grateful for Dutch Bros.' continued support and partnership in the fight against ALS," MDA Senior Vice President and Scientific Program Director Grace Pavlath said in a news release. "This investment will help MDA make enormous strides in developing treatments and, ultimately, a cure for ALS." Dutch Bros. is the country's largest privately held, drive-thru coffee company, with 263 locations and more than 5,000 employees in seven states. The company and its franchise-holders donate more than $2 million a year to nonprofit organizations and local causes selected by local owner-operators. Dutch Bros. Coffee still has its headquarters in Grants Pass, where it was founded in 1992 by the Boersma brothers.
