A number of wanderers were ordered out of the city this morning by the police after they had started a begging campaign on Main Street. Lizzie Thurman , age 16, is being sought by the authorities to enforce a sentence imposed by the juvenile court. The young lady was to have been taken to the state Industrial School today, and was left in the care of her mother, Mrs. Ida Barr, overnight. During the period, the girl escaped, and when an officer called for her this morning, she was gone. It is likely that the mother will be arrested on a charge of abetting in the escape. The girl is alleged to be incorrigible, and particularly fond of joy rides. Police Judge Gay announces that all violations of the law covering the sale of cigarettes and tobacco to minors will be prosecuted to the limit. Schoolteachers have complained to the police that nicotine was having an effect on the work of boys. The police attach some of the blame to older boys who smoke cigarettes in public, thus setting an example. The price of hogs on the local market underwent a half-cent rise Thursday, and further boosting of the price is expected within the next 10 days. Eastern and Middle West markets are glutted with pork, and as soon as this is cleared away, the price is expected to resume normal conditions on the coast. Much of the present slackness in price is charged to the manipulation of Portland dealers by local raisers.
