Firefighters from Applegate Valley Fire District No. 9, Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and Oregon Department of Forestry couldn't do much about the 1976 Ford F-250 that had burst into flames while being driven on the hilly property when they arrived shortly after 1:30 p.m. But they were able to keep flames away from a two-story 2,100-square-foot on 10 acres at 7666 Upper Applegate Road, not far from the McKee Bridge community. "The best we can determine is that the property owner pulled into the driveway, smelled a little bit of smoke, got out and noticed smoke and flame on the ground," said Applegate Valley Fire Chief Mike McLaughlin. "When he turned around his truck was fully involved." Some of the vegetation had been cut back with a weed-eater, but there were still weeds that allowed flames to spread near the 30-year-old home. "We were able to knock it down as it approached the house," McLaughlin said. It was the third grass fire in the district this season, the chief said. There was another fire in the Upper Applegate area and one between Applegate and Williams. Applegate Valley Fire District dispatched two engines and a tender, while Rogue River-Siskiyou Battalion 11 and three from ODF crews responded.
