For example, the code states: U.S. Title 4, Code 5 (a) states that ordinarily it (the U.S. flag) should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, although the flag code permits nighttime display when a patriotic effect is desired. While this law is only an “advisory rule” and is not enforced, I’ve always been curious why the flags outside Medford’s City Hall are not illuminated during nighttime hours. I always thought that illuminating the U.S. flag at night shows a sign of respect for the flag and our country. Could you please enlighten me on this issue? — Daniel E., Medford We’d be happy to shed a little light on this subject, Daniel. We checked in with Greg McKown at the city of Medford, and he said the lighting system at City Hall is inadequate. Currently, there’s a light attached to City Hall that shines on the flag pole. It works fine when the flags are flying at full-staff. However, when the flags are lowered to half-staff, the lights can’t be directed downward because they’ll shine into the eyes of motorists. The city realizes this is a problem, and flag poles in other locations aren’t illuminated correctly. In fact, the flag poles at Veteran’s Park in south Medford don’t have any lighting. Without lighting, the city has to take on the time-intensive task of raising and lowering flags every day. Realizing the problem, the city has set aside $36,000 to install new lighting at City Hall, the Santo Community Center, the Medford Service Center on Columbus Avenue and at U.S. Cellular Park. The new lighting at City Hall will shine upwards, bathing Old Glory in light even at half-staff. We hope that brightens your day, Daniel.
