MARY'S OFFERS FULL COURSE FOR COMING YEAR Education, in its truest sense, must cultivate both mind and heart, it must look to the moral and physical as well as the mental development of the child, and it must result in a character sufficiently well rounded out to be able to cope with all the requirements of the home and society. Such an education is not impossible where there are fortunate surroundings and where individual attention is given by sympathetic teachers, who are interested not only in their work but in their pupils. Such are the ideal conditions offered by St. Mary's Academy, a school for day pupils and boarders. Pleasant, airy classrooms, small classes which permit the personal direction so requisite to the progress of the child, abundant outdoor space for games and recreation, the best of teaching, supervision and direction are the advantage of every pupil. In addition to this the regulations of the boarding school cultivate in the young girl, who comes to share in the home life of the academy the social spirit, so desirable a part of the training of one, who is to be an efficient and helpful homemaker or at least, a potent factor in the happiness of a home. The curriculum offers a complete four year high school course, grammar grade and primary instruction with a thoroughness of work that is attested by the development of all the pupils. Sewing, embroidery and needlework are taught throughout the grades and high school. Frequent plays and recitals give the pupils training in oral expression and the grace of bearing that characterizes the convent-bred girl. In the music department, violin and piano are taught according to the most approved methods. Music recitals, of which chorus work and ensemble playing are features, stimulate the interest and train the pupil to graceful execution. In the art department are taught oil painting, water colors, pastel, charcoal, pen and ink and china painting. Outdoor sketching is a feature of the art work enjoyed by the pupils; for not the least of the work of both music and art departments is done in the regular high school and grade classrooms, where the trained teachers of these departments teach the art and music of the school curriculum.
