That’s what we do and that’s what got us to the state championship last year.” Morgan scored in the 16th minute and again at the 58-minute mark on a pass from Natalie Parker. Megan Cowan scored in the 36th minute for the Black Tornado (1-0) on a setup by Haylie Durant. Splitting duties at goalkeeper, freshman Brinley O’Neill had four saves and Melissa Tonkin three. BEND 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 : South Medford kept Bend contained in its season opener until the second half, when the Lava Bears scored all three of their goals at South Medford High. Boys Soccer SOUTH MEDFORD 2, BEND 2 : At Bend, Kyle Owings scored both goals, including a 79th-minute equalizer, for South Medford in the season opener. Owings cashed in on a Diego Rodriguez through ball from around the 20-yard mark in the 28th minute. The senior forward capitalized on a free kick from just outside the box with one minute left in the match. The Panther defense was led by Josue Reyes. MOUNTAIN VIEW 2, NORTH MEDFORD 1 : At Bend, Ashton Brownlow scored about 30 minutes into the game from 8 yards out off a pass from Rene Torres-Mata to give North Medford a 1-0 halftime lead. Senior goalkeeper Eric Benitez had 10 saves, including a penalty kick, for North Medford (0-2). Cross Country THE INVITATIONAL : At Eugene, St. Mary's senior Marissa Dobry won the girls 5,000 meters and the Crusader girls finished third in a 13-school field at the Fern Ridge Reservoir. Dobry posted a winning time of 18:52.7. Sheldon won the girls event with 44 points and St. Mary's had 108 points. Ashland placed sixth (178) and Phoenix was 10th (206). Other local girls in the top 30 were Zaruba Anderson of Hidden Valley (sixth, 19.37.1), Emma Amundsen of Phoenix (seventh, 19.44.2), Emma Bennion of St. Mary's (14th, 20.44.5), Christine Impara of Ashland (17th, 20:48.4), Brooke Johnson of Grants Pass (19th, 20:55.0), Claire Pryor of Ashland (22nd, 20:58.2), Gianna Isola of St. Mary's (23rd, 20:59.9) and Hazel Richards of Ashland (27th, 21:06.3). In boys, the top local placer was 21st by Raymond Impara of Ashland (17:13.5). Robert Vos of Phoenix finished 22nd (17:13.7). South Eugene won the 17-school field with 38 points. Phoenix finished fifth (160), Ashland was eighth (217) and St. Mary's was 15th (422) Other local boys in the top 50 were Barrett Titus of Grants Pass (27th, 17:22), Jacob Bergren of Phoenix (32nd, 17:28.1), Leif Amundsen of Phoenix (34th, 17:33.6), Jordan Mortensen of Ashland (40th, 17:43.6), Nathan Watt of Phoenix (43rd, 17:49.1), Parter Cook of Phoenix (44th, 17:51.7), Thomas Hayes of Grants Pass (45th, 17:53.7) and Drake Knowles of Phoenix (17:57.8). Volleyball ILLINOIS VALLEY 3, PROSPECT 2 : At Cave Junction, Prospect battled but Illinois Valley prevailed with a 25-23, 9-25, 25-18, 25-27, 16-14 nonleague victory. The Cougars (1-1) were led by Chrystyna Smith’s 14 kills and Baley VanWormer contributed 10. Jordan Kuykendall registered 29 assists and 18 digs for the Cougars, who received 20 digs from Ashli Rigel. Golf SUNRIVER JUNIOR OPEN : At Sunriver, Kiana Oshiro of Central Point finished fourth in the girls division of the American Junior Golf Association 54-hole tournament on Thursday. Oshiro shot a par-71 in her final round Friday and finished with a 215 in the three-day event. Daniele Giles of Central Point placed tied for 24th with a 238. In the boys division, Medford's Joshua Wu placed 12th with a 214 total. Wu shot rounds of 69, 75 and 70 on the par-71 layout.
